That do ya do when it's July 13,2013 and you're not scheduled to run a Half Marathon (13.1). (I'm cracking up that I explained a half, but really, two years ago, I had NO idea!!) Well, ya just make one because on 7.13.2013... You just HAVE to run 13.1!!! Especially if a fellow fish is doing the Bryce Canyon half and you're super jealous, but don't think your knee can handle it. Hence, the Johnson Canyon Lucky 13 was founded.... Ya, it's a thing. Not only is it a thing, but it was one of the participants first half ever, so that's cool.. right? Annnddddd all the participants had 13 in their number. Yes we had bibs. I'm sure all the Cowboys going down the road wondered... what the heck.
It's the little things that make life big!!

TZR 2013
Two weeks ago, some of us were right in the middle of our Top Of Zion Relay. I think it has taken so long to post about it because it kicked our butts and maybe even our spirits a little. A relay brings with it so many emotions and they change quickly and its just kinda a crazy thing. Especially with a team of 13 (hey.... that's awesome though.. 13) girls. It was fun though and hard as all hard.
People have called this relay the iron man of relays... besides the dramatic elevation changes, the heat is a huge factor in this. We learned from others last year to bring sprayers and those got us through our middle of the day legs.
The great thing about this relay is that ya just get to kinda forgot all the normal everyday responsibilities and just enjoy hanging out with your friends, acting silly, dancing to motivate and entertain each other, singing, putting a giant jalapeno on top of your car, giving random strangers high fives or spraying them down or letting them give you a sponge bath in the middle of the road and, oh ya, running. I mean normally we can't just wear a sombrero and stand on the side of the road, blast some Mexican tunes and do crazy dance moves. It's good... it's challenging. It also boosts the spirit. Proving to ourselves that we can do hard things. It stretches us to our limits.
Sometimes miracles happen too... example; Maryann was running on north Fork road and we really NEEDED to dance for her, but there wasn't an ipod plugged in to our music. Kamie Lee found the first radio station she could... "If you're going through Hell, Keep on going" was on.... I'm not even kidding.. Miraculous right?
It's all those things and the inside jokes and the team coming together when it's needed the most. Yeah, ya don't get a lot of sleep and sometimes there is stress, but in the end, it's pretty awesome.... SAIL.

It's a helluva place to lose a cow, or run a race!
Bryce Canyon half marathon 2013. I haven't ran it in years, it just hasn't fit into my schedule. I wasn't going to run it this year either, I had signed up my husband and I for the 1/2 and all our kiddos for the 5K. Bryant and I have been running A LOT of races and relays lately and I really just wanted to call and cancel our spots. The kids were all excited to run, so we stuck with it.
(Way to stick with it MaryAnn. Who cares about your time! Your kids will always remember it)
I tried to run and keep a good pace, but my gut hurt almost the whole time. It made it hard to want to keep running, so I walked a bunch. I think the last time I ran the Bryce 1/2 I did it in like 1 hour 50 minutes. This time that was not the case, took me 2 hours and 1 minute. I even had to stop at a potty along the way. I know that most of my problems are from my lack of eating right! I have got to change some terrible eating habits, like RIGHT NOW!
There were SO many runners this year. I never had to run by myself, always tons of people around me!

Sometimes you just do things.
I just finished listening to EAT AND RUN. It is a book about Scott Jurek who is... well, here is a quote from his web site about the book:
In Eat & Run, Scott Jurek opens up about his life and career — as an elite athlete and a vegan — and inspires runners at every level. From his Midwestern childhood of hunting, fishing, and cooking for his meat-and-potatoes family, to his early beginnings in running (he hated it), to his slow transition to ultrarunning and veganism, to his incredible, world-spanning, record-breaking races — Scott’s story shows the power of an iron will and the importance of thinking of our food as our fuel.
Chock full of incredible, on-the-brink stories of endurance and competition, as well as fascinating science and accessible practical advice — including his own favorite plant based recipes, Eat & Run will motivate everyone to "go the distance" whether that means getting out for that first run, expanding your food horizons, or simply exploring the limits of your own potential.
"Anyone can be an ultrarunner," says Jurek. His remarkable story is a reminder that, no matter how far you go, every day’s run is a journey of discovery and the chance to explore what’s possible in sport — and in life.
It was an interesting book. I like to listen to books like this to motivate me. It was while listening to BORN TO RUN (which Scott Jurek is also in) that I decided maybe... just maybe, I could do a marathon. Dang that book.. ha ha.. JK. This guy is a little over the top.. well, a lot. But he pushes through a lot. I think in the book he probably said, "Sometimes you just do thing.". over 100 times.. no exaggeration. I should have counted. It was what his dad would say to him and he didn't like it at the time.
To review the book.. I liked it ok, yes it motivated me, I liked that he ran for his mom, she had MS and couldn't walk. He seemed to be a selfish guy and his friends had terrible language. ha ha. I don't know if un ultra marathoner can be anything but, they have to spend so much time training. I can't even imagine. I feel like planning for the marathon is taking a lot of time. Whew. Seriously.
He came from a very humble childhood and I liked when he talked about that. He would randomly throw in training tips or facts about running. One was where a marathon originated, which I found interesting and couldn't believe I never thought about that. So I looked it up. Here is what I learned:
The modern Athens Marathon commemorates the run of the soldier Pheidippides from a battlefield at the site of the town of Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 B.C.
Legend has it that Pheidippides delivered the momentous message "Niki!" ("victory"), then collapsed and died.
The Athens Marathon is recognized as the original marathon course and it's the same course used in the 2004 Olympics held in Athens.
The first modern Olympic games were held in 1896 in Greece.
The legend of Pheidippides was honored by a 24.85 mile (40,000 meters) run from Marathon Bridge to Olympic stadium in Athens.
Athens Stadium, the finish line for the Athens Marathon stands on the site of a stadium used in classical times.
Spiridon Louis, a Greek postal worker, won the first modern Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 58 minutes, 50 seconds.
At the 1908 Olympic Games in London, the marathon distance was changed to 26.2 miles to cover the ground from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium, with the 2.2 miles added on so the race could finish in front of royal family's viewing box. This added two miles to the course, and is the origin of the Marathon tradition of shouting "God save the Queen!" (or other words relating to the Queen) as mile post 24 is passed.
(I did not know these random facts and now cannot wait to yell out "God Save the Queen" I mean I am as much British as I am Mexican. I'll claim it!)
He even gave recipes at the end of the book that, I have to admit, I want to try some, even though I think his way of eating is CRAZINESS!! A Raw Vegan?!!.. It did make me think about how I fuel my body and want to do better.... Not Vegan better, but better. Anyway, Yes motivation. Sometimes boring. Sometimes bad language. Sometimes interesting. Don't think I could have stuck to it reading it, but it was great while doing laundry and yard work. And that's my rewiew.

Just Gotta Commit!
Eating and running have so much to do with each other. It's so hard to have a good run when you haven't been fueling your body with good food. I have to remind myself of this like every day that I run and wish that I would have eaten better the day before! So here I am committing myself to a better diet yet again! Maybe if I post my commitment on here I will hold myself to it more! Healthy eating = Awesome running!

Not Good...
But there is something I can do about it! I just gotta get out and RUN! Last week was crazy busy with stuff and emotional stuff too. I was up in Salt Lake/Provo for one of my kids that was doing Stadium of Fire. A really good friend also had a medical emergency with one of her kids and I was worried sick about him and her. I couldn't focus on running... so here goes for a better week this week!
And because it is suppose to be motivational Monday... (I gotta remember this and just RUN!)

The beast and 13 weeks
In 13 Weeks, we will be running the marathon! Wow. I kinda feel like our training starts now since we have been so busy with relays and stuff until now. It's cool though because 13 is our number!! IN 2013 We are running a MARATHON!!! It's a big year. So we did our long run together, Some of us did 10, some did more. It was a nice run. We stayed in Town and did the "our skirts of town" run. In the Ranchos we encountered The Beast. Dude.. This dog scared us, not bad enough to not stop and take a picture with him. ha ha. It was a perfect day for a run, rain from the day before was still lingering in the air keeping the temps down. Once my Nike plus said mile 10 though, I was done.... My knee was done. Had to call for a ride half way down the Ranchos dip. I have GOT to fix this knee!!! Getting excited though!!
Wow! I'm not so sure about this picture of me but I'm willing to take one for the team just to capture how big this "beast" of a dog was! I still don't even think the picture does him/her justice! I think anytime I'm feeling slow or tired I'm going to imagine "Beasthound" chasing after me. I'm sure to pick up speed. Loved this run just because I love my fellow fishies. 13 Weeks to go! Yahoo!
